Excavation Marshall – Banksperson
- An Excavation Marshall, also known as Banksperson or Banksman, plays a key role in keeping excavation work safe. Their main tasks include checking the site before digging starts, agreeing on a clear communication plan and looking out for risks from underground services.

This training is essential for workers to safely operate as an Excavation Marshall– Banksperson. Delegates will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, and understand procedures and appropriate documentation and classifications.
Who should attend
This certification is for Plant Operators who need to direct or guide excavators as part of their daily duties.
Course Outline
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an Excavation Marshall —Banks Person
- Have knowledge of the equipment to be used and to be conversant with Method Statements – Risk Assessments – Permits to Work
- Identify and manitain PPE appropriate for use
- Conduct all pre-excavation checks
- Agree on communication signals and emergency procedures
- Safe positioning of Excavation Marshall – Banksperson
- Define and identify the different types of underground services
- Identify risks that excavations can present and how people may be affected
- Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
- Carry out exploratory tasks
- Identify the risks of excavating near to underground services, and the safe digging practices that should be adopted
- Carry out all end shift and safe storgae procedures
On course completion
Operators will receive a Trained Operator CSCS/NPORS Card valid for two years.
